But have we?….

This evening I was sitting in a little zoom session led by Future Schools Alliance and one of the presenters popped a graphic similar to the one below up and asked us to look closely at what it was telling us.

Have we really changed? Have we really shifted from a 20th-century Learning Paradigm to a 21st Century learning paradigm? Have we shifted? Or are we just still sitting in 20th Century classrooms with some funky chairs and schmick looking whiteboards?

I paused… and I was uncomfortable. A little annoying voice popped up and asked me…. ‘But have we?’

And you know what… I don’t think we have moved much.

So I told myself it was ok, we are only just starting the 21st Century, so therefore we will get there… but no, we are 21 years into that journey already. We’re 20% done with this 21st Century learning already.

We can also get our hackles up and think of this another way… Who’s to say this list is finite for what we need education to actually be in 2099? It’s not. That we do know for sure.

And then I thought… who made this stupid list? No answer.

And then I thought… What have we changed that isn't on this list? Digital stuff maybe. But really? have we?

And then I came to calm realisation that the point is this: 20th Century classrooms will not give our Generation Z and Generation Alfa students the opportunities they need to survive in the world of work and life, so it really is time to really shift it up a little. or a lot. you chose. just shift it.

Thanks again to the Future Schools Alliance Team for making me sit uncomfortably while building my inner strength to continue asking the questions and pondering the direction my journey needs to take.
